Before China Forbes became the lead singer of Pink Martini, she was sister to Maya Forbes, a self-described “fighter” and “emotional” kid.

But what started off as fighting between the two evolved into a strong friendship.

That relationship helped steady the sisters as they lived with their loving, but bipolar father and away from their mother, who was attending business school.

Maya Forbes has written and directed a movie about that period of their childhood called Infinitely Polar Bear. The sisters spoke to OPB's Weekend Edition host John Sepulvado ahead of the film's Portland premiere.
