Postcards From The Pandemic: Sick And Untested In Portland

By Emily Cureton Cook (OPB)
Portland, Ore. April 13, 2020 11 p.m.

OPB reporters and photographers are capturing “Postcards from the Pandemic” to document the lived experience of people in the Northwest during this historic and unusual time.

Every country has gotten the same message from the World Health Organization: test every suspected case of coronavirus. But that’s not happening. Oregon is among many states struggling to offer widespread testing, leaving sick people in the dark.

In Portland, Betsy Harper came down with coronavirus symptoms in March, and decided to confine herself to one room of her family’s home.

Harper recorded herself in conversation with OPB’s Emily Cureton. Original music produced by Bend-based composer Grace Miedziak.

We want to hear about your experience right now, too. You can send us a voice memo. Email postcards@opb.org. And be sure to include your phone number.
