The Hillsboro Police Department said in a news release that one of the men was armed with a handgun, refused to drop it, and shots were fired.

The officer shot the driver who had been holding the handgun at around 6 p.m. The other driver and the officer were both uninjured, police said.

Eric Bunday, a sergeant with the Hillsboro Police Department, said two officers have since been placed on paid leave.

Police have not identified anyone involved in the shooting.

Bunday said investigators with the Washington County Major Crimes Team are “working to determine what relationship existed between the two men, if any, and what led them to be in the parking lot.”
