Summer looks like it may be coming to an end in northwest Oregon, with cooler weather in the forecast.

The region is slated to get some showers and rain late this weekend and into this upcoming week, according to the National Weather Service in Portland.

Temperatures may rise back into the 70s later in the week, but nowhere near the hot summer weather the area has seen.

If the cooler, damper weather continues, it could bring the end of fire season, David Bishop with NWS Portland said.

“It’ll definitely more or less quash the fire weather,” Bishop said. “However, you know, things do have a tendency to change and we will have a better idea of where our fire weather season sits by say, Wednesday or Thursday.”

Oregon forestry officials said in a recent meeting that September can still be an active time for fires in the western part of the state.
