Parents and staff at Jefferson and Madison high schools received messages from their principals Sunday night. They said students had received  "anonymous calls from an individual claiming that they were going to bring a weapon to both campuses Monday morning."

Portland police are investigating, and intend to be at both schools in the morning, according to statements from the principals and the Portland Police Bureau.

In their messages, the Jefferson and Madison principals applauded students for alerting police to the threats of campus violence.

The principals' entire message:

Dear Families,
I would like to bring to your attention that police are investigating threats of violence at Jefferson High School and Madison High School campuses.  Several students received anonymous calls from an individual claiming that they were going to bring a weapon to both campuses Monday morning. We are working with police to investigate the matter.  As police continue to investigate, we have requested police presence at both schools on Monday. Campus security agents and staff will continue to monitor the hallways and campus throughout the day.
I want to applaud the students for reporting the threat and thank Portland Police officers who are investigating the matter.  As always, we encourage students to step forward immediately if they  hear or see any suspicious activity at our schools.
Thank you for your on-going support and will update you when we learn of any new information.

The messages were signed by principal Margaret Calvert (for the Jefferson community) or Petra Callin (for the Madison community).
