TriMet is planning $2.1 million in upgrades to train tracks in downtown Portland in May that will result in delays and crowded trains. Construction is scheduled to run May 8–21.

“There will be a big impact to riders,” said Roberta Altstadt, a spokeswoman with the agency. “Unfortunately, this is major work. It is big work and there is no way to do it in the few hours overnight that MAX trains do not run.”

The agency is replacing track along 1st Avenue in downtown Portland, which is estimated to cost $2.1 million.

“We’re working on the oldest section of the MAX system,” Altstadt said. “It’s been open since 1986. That’s 30 years of providing service to TriMet riders. As with any light rail system, there comes a time to make some necessary and major replacements and improvements. And that’s where we are today.”

Altstadt said the improvements will give riders a smoother, quieter ride.

In August, TriMet is scheduled to close sections of track in the Rose Quarter for two weeks as it makes repairs there.

“We’re doing the work now rather than waiting until it’s too late, and we’re rushing to do it unplanned,” she said. “We’re planning the work now so that we can maintain our MAX service.”
