Celilo Animation & Historical Film

Nov. 20, 2008 3:58 p.m.

These two videos provide additional insight into the Celilo Revealed story. Sonar data from the Army Corps of Engineers paints a detailed picture of the bottom of the Columbia River at Celilo Falls. OPB used the Corps' data to render these animations. Red areas are 40 feet underwater. Blue & green areas can be 60 feet or deeper. Remarkable color historic film shot by the Army Corps of Engineers shows how important Celilo Falls was to Northwest tribes. Native Americans from across what are now Oregon, Washington & Idaho traveled to Celilo for 10,000 years as a hub for trade, fishing & culture.
