More than 3 thousand people live on the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Tribal leaders urged all residents to comply with Oregon Gov. Kate Brown’s “stay at home” order in March, and in the intervening time have gone even further than state guidelines in terms of mask wearing and social distancing. Now that the county has been put back to baseline status, we talk with Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation’s Chuck Sams about how the community is responding to the ongoing pandemic and about the newly formed Intergovernmental Task Force.
