Oregon announced a grim new record in the COVID-19 pandemic: 54 more people have died, according to figures released by the Oregon Health Authority Tuesday.
It’s the highest tally on any day since the pandemic began.
“Today’s record-high death toll tragically reminds us that the pandemic is far from over despite the arrival of vaccines in Oregon,” said Patrick Allen, director of the Oregon Health Authority.
“These Oregonians and the ones who passed before them were loved ones who will be dearly missed by their families, for whom we express our sincerest condolences.”
The more than 50 previously unreported deaths took place over the past month. The most recent was just yesterday, Dec. 14.
The delay in reporting deaths occurs because it can take the state and the Centers for Disease Control several weeks to process death certificates and confirm the cause was COVID-19.
The Oregon Health Authority says the rising number of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in November is one reason for the record-high death toll.
The fatalities range in age from a 39-year-old woman in Washington County to a 97-year-old in Multnomah County. People died all across Oregon – from Malheur County in the state’s southeastern corner through the Columbia Gorge and the Portland metro area.
There are currently more than 500 people hospitalized statewide with COVID-19.
