Police are releasing limited details about a standoff near Hillsboro’s Liberty High School that began Friday morning and continued into Saturday afternoon. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday morning that a man having an apparent mental health crisis fired a gun several times at officers and others during the 30-hour standoff.
Concerned family members first called mental health workers to the home Friday morning. Then they called 911 when the man started shooting at the people who came to help.
The mental health workers were able to escape.
Police then sent in a tactical team and a crisis negotiation unit. The man was alone in the home when they arrived. As they tried to get him outside to surrender, police say, he fired at officers twice.
Several agencies were called in to help with the negotiations. The man was finally taken into custody on Saturday afternoon.
After a medical evaluation he was jailed on several charges. No injuries were reported.
