Single-engine plane crashes southeast of Salem, killing an Oregon man and injuring his wife

The pilot of a single-engine airplane died when the plane crashed near the town of Scio Sunday afternoon.

First responders and neighbors arriving at the crash scene found the pilot, 78-year-old Dennis Jackson of Independence, had died.

His wife, Amy Jackson, was also in the plane when it crashed. She was taken to Salem Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The aircraft, listed as an “experimental amateur built aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, is described as a “Dennis Jackson RV-8″ single-engine airplane, manufactured in 2004.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash, along with detectives from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.
