Portland’s Steel Bridge was closed to all traffic for a few hours Monday morning after a freight train derailment.

THANKS TO OUR SPONSOR:

At around 10:30 a.m., the bridge’s upper deck reopened to cars, bikes and pedestrians after a safety inspection of the derailment on the lower level.

Portland Fire & Rescue said two empty lumber cars derailed on the bridge. Four other train cars partially derailed.

No injuries have been reported. A fire crew assessed whether there are hazardous materials issues, but did not report any leaks.

Four TriMet MAX lines were impacted and the agency used shuttle buses to transport riders. MAX service across the bridge resumed at about 1 p.m.

The track is shared by Union Pacific and BNSF railroads.
