The National Weather Service says Portland may see snow early next week.

Meteorologists say there is potential for snow on Sunday, Feb. 3, in the Portland area.

Jeremiah Pyle, a meteorologist with Portland’s National Weather Service office, said a cold air mass is coming into the area, but it's too early to definitively say whether the flurries will stick to the ground.

“Things have been looking increasingly better for snow setup here over the last couple of days,” he said.

“I’d hesitate to say 'likely' at this point, but I would say that the chances are on the rise right now. There’s at least a reasonable chance.”

As it gets later into the week, Pyle said, “it’ll become a little bit easier to put a probability on it.”

“The limiting factor on this one is there’s not a whole lot of precipitation,” he said. “It’s starting to look like it’s going to be cold enough."

Pyle said the bigger question is, Will there be enough precipitation to actually produce any snow?

If there is enough precipitation, Pyle said, there is potential that snow could fall at the lowest elevations across Portland. More significant accumulation is expected east of the Cascade range.
