Portland's Bureau of Development Services is proposing new rules for people operating short-term rentals using sites such as Airbnb.
The new rules would increase fines and eliminate the 30-day grace period for people whose properties are found to be in violation of the city’s requirements. They would apply to short-term rentals without a permit, those renting out more rooms than a permit allows or renting out entire homes that don’t also have a long-term resident.
Airbnb spokeswoman Laura Rillos said in a statement, "The vast majority of our hosts in Portland are sharing the homes in which they live in order to earn extra money to pay their bills. We will continue to encourage all of our hosts to comply with local laws; we remain committed to helping Portland hosts register with the city; and will continue to proactively remove unwanted commercial listings from our platform."
An analysis by FiveThirtyEight earlier this year found that about 2,700 of Portland's active Airbnb listings are operated illegally.
A public hearing on the proposed city rule is set for Dec. 16.
