Poll: Portland Voters Not Too Hot On Mayor Hales' Performance

Voters rate Portland Mayor Charlie Hales’s job performance as a C- according to a new OPB poll.

The firm DHM Research conducted the poll and talked to just over 400 likely Portland voters about the city's current mayor.

Hales announced last fall he would not seek re-election.

John Horvik, the political director at DHM, says likely voters are lukewarm about Hales.

“There’s probably good reason why he decided not to run for re-election. I don’t think these numbers say he’s particularly unpopular, but there wasn’t a groundswell of support for him and I think we saw that though his four years."

Hales has said he chose not to run so he could focus on being a mayor during the final months of his term. He’s said his priorities for his remaining months in office are reducing homelessness and gang violence and improving morale at the police bureau.

Fifteen people are running

to replace him in Tuesday’s primary.
