Portland’s folk music scene is one of the best in the country (and has been for quite a while).

Elliott Smith called the city home for most of his formative years, including the period where he transitioned from being the frontman of the rock band Heatmiser, to become a critically acclaimed solo musician. In the 2000s, stalwarts like Laura Veirs and Laura Gibson followed in Smith’s footsteps, and, recently, local musicians like Anna Tivel, Haley Heynderickx and Jeffrey Martin have also emerged on the national stage.

But the depth of the scene doesn’t stop there as a new generation of songwriters quietly stir in bedroom recording studios across the Rose City.

Songwriter Kyle Petersen is part of this burgeoning lo-fi movement. Performing without much fanfare under the name Linus Kyle, he’s crafted a catalogue of endearing and beautifully uneasy folk songs, the best of which appeared on his 2018 album, “It’s No Easy Thing To Do.”

Here, Linus Kyle performs a previously unreleased song called “One By One” live in his home.

“One by One” was performed by Linus Kyle and was recorded by Banana Stand Media on July 14, 2018, in North Portland, Oregon. The video was shot and edited by Michael Reiersgaard. Audio for this video was recorded and mixed by Matthew Thomson.
