Mount Hood from the air.
David Miller / OPB
With Alaska's Mt. McKinley being renamed its traditional name, Denali, we take up the idea of renaming Mt. Hood. The mountain was named in the late 1700s for Lord Admiral Samuel Hood, by an early explorer. Hood never saw the mountain, just as McKinley never saw the peak named for him. Should it be renamed Wy'east, thought to be a Native American name for the mountain? Where exactly does Wy'east originate from?
