" grant from the Smithsonian to go to the museum and access tribal artifacts, including documents, audio recordings, tools and garments. Valerie Switzler, the tribe's Cultural and Heritage director, says even though they weren't able to bring any of the hundreds of documents, photos, tools and other items home with them, on their trip this month. But she says the copies and pictures they took are invaluable. The tribe's last fluent speaker of the native Kiksht language

died a few years ago

, and there is a wide and concerted effort to

bring back

the language.
