Donovan Scribes, a Black writer, artist and producer, thinks a person’s name can be a point of pride or a point of shame. The fourth-generation Portlander recently wrote an essay explaining why he chose to change his surname from Smith to Scribes. He joins us to explain his decision, which is the culmination of a deeply personal journey and an act of reclamation made when confronting the legacy of slavery within his own family’s history.
