Dozens of protesters gathered outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Portland on Tuesday afternoon and into the early hours Wednesday morning, in opposition to the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies.
The protest in Portland was much smaller compared to those that gripped parts of Los Angeles over the weekend where President Donald Trump has deployed hundreds of U.S. Marines and thousands of members of the National Guard over the objections of California officials.

Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, protesters in Portland held signs outside the entrance to the ICE office. By evening, the situation intensified. Some eight officers with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security along with a tactical vehicle moved in, and reportedly used at least one flash bang to disperse demonstrators.
For hours, Portland police officers were nowhere in sight. Then, shortly after midnight, at least three PPB cruisers arrived, with sirens and their lights flashing. At almost at the same time, protesters outside the ICE building declared they were “going for a walk” and left the area.
Earlier this week, police chief Bob Day said even though his officers helped clear ICE’s driveway during small demonstrations over the weekend it would not happen again.
“We traditionally do not clear the driveway,” Day told reporters. “Going forward we will not be clearing stuff from the driveway of the facility and we will not be engaging with any kind of perceived or actual support of vans or transports.”

As of early Wednesday, it did not appear there were any arrests connected to the Portland demonstrations.
Across the country, ICE has increased immigration enforcement in recent weeks. In Portland, federal immigration officers have arrested at least four people outside immigration court. All are asylum seekers and were attending required hearings in their immigration cases.
A clash between police and some 40 demonstrators in Seattle lasted for hours on Tuesday, according to OPB’s news partner KUOW. Protesters used electric scooters and bikes to block ICE vans from leaving immigration court.
