A man is expected to recover from his injuries after being shot Tuesday morning by police in Salem.

Deputies with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene just before 7 a.m. Tuesday after a 911 caller reported being held hostage in a bathroom inside a home in the 4700 block of State Street.

In a press release, Oregon State Police, the agency leading the investigation, said deputies encountered 39-year-old Juan Carlos Gomez-Valles shortly after entering the home. Police say he had two knives.

“An altercation ensued, and at least one deputy fired, and Gomez-Valles was struck by a bullet,” the release reads. “Deputies rendered immediate aid and Gomez-Valles was transported to Salem Hospital.”

The deputies involved have been identified as Alan Jefferson and Tyson Gardner. The two are recruit deputies who have been on the job for less than one year, according to OSP.

Neither deputy was injured. OSP says Gomez-Valles was on parole and is currently in custody.

The shooting remains under investigation.
