Woodburn officer shoots, kills man holding tire irons

A 911 caller reported Saturday night that a man was acting aggressively and causing a disturbance on Arney Road in Woodburn.

A Woodburn police officer shot and killed a man on Saturday night who was holding several tire irons, police said.

A 911 caller had reported just after 10:30 p.m. that an aggressive man was causing a disturbance in the 16000 block of Arney Road Northeast in Woodburn.

Officer Jackson Ryan was dispatched to the scene, where he contacted the suspect, 37-year-old Israel Hernandez-Martinez, in the roadway, according to a police press release.

Investigators said a confrontation ensued and Ryan shot Hernandez-Martinez.

Additional Woodburn officers arrived at the scene and provided medical assistance, but Hernandez-Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Salem Police Department is leading the investigation into the shooting and has not yet released details about what happened from the time contact was initiated until shots were fired.

Oregon State Police and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office are assisting with the investigation.
