Police in Seaside, Oregon, shot and killed a man Wednesday night who was suspected of killing two people in Pierce County, Washington, earlier in the day.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office had announced Wednesday morning that police were searching for 24-year-old Hayes Miles McCloud in connection with one homicide in Puyallup and another in Tacoma.
Oregon State Police received an alert early Wednesday afternoon that McCloud may be traveling to Oregon. Just after 6 p.m., police in Seaside announced they had found him inside his SUV.
Officers from Gearhart and Cannon Beach responded to the scene to help Seaside police take McCloud into custody.
McCloud started shooting at officers from all three police departments as they moved toward his vehicle, according to an OSP press release. The officers fired back. McCloud drove away, but was found dead in the vehicle a short distance away.
No officers were injured. Those involved will be placed on leave during the investigation.
OSP will lead that investigation, with assistance from the Clatsop County Major Crimes Team.
