Portland Public Schools is starting classes a lot earlier this year than it has in the past. The district typically opens after Labor Day. The first day of school is just 10 days from Monday.

Labor Day arrives late this year, and Oregon school districts have responded to that differently, depending on where you are. Portland is starting Aug. 27. The early start date has been unpopular with some parents, fueling a petition to move the start date later.

Portland's date is earlier than many districts. David Douglas schools start up two weeks later, on Sept. 10. Beaverton starts Sept. 8.

But Portland isn't the earliest around either. The Oregon Trail School District in Clackamas County starts a week from Friday — on Aug. 24.

August start dates may be a little unusual in Oregon, but around the country there are lots of August school openings. Denver schools are starting on Aug. 24. It's the same in Houston and Miami.

But Seattle Public Schools are later. Sept. 9 is the first day for students there.
