Oregon Supreme Court Justice Richard Baldwin will step down next spring.

THANKS TO OUR SPONSOR:

Baldwin had served as a trial court judge in Multnomah County for more than a decade when he was elected to Oregon's highest court in 2012.

It turns out he won't even complete his first six-year term in that role, however. According to the office of Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, Baldwin's retirement is effective April 1.

The announcement from Brown gave no explanation for Baldwin's decision to step down.

The governor will appointment a replacement to fill the remainder of his term.

According to state law, interested applicants need to be United States citizens and have been a resident of Oregon for at least three years.

Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the date of Baldwin's retirement. It is April 1.
