UPDATE (June 10, 1:40 p.m. PT) — The city of Salem is extending its drinking water advisory for at least two more weeks. Officials say that water samples taken Friday showed cyanotoxins in the city's water system are below Environmental Protection Agency advisory levels. But they say that as a precaution, they're keeping the drinking water advisory in place for vulnerable people.
Salem officials say children under age six, people with compromised immune systems, pets, pregnant women and nursing mothers should use bottled water. Algae blooms at Detroit Lake, a reservoir on the Santiam River that provides Salem with drinking water, produced the toxins.
Oregon Gov. Kate Brown's emergency declaration from the initial advisory in late May is still in effect. On Wednesday afternoon, Brown re-activated the National Guard to help distribute water around the city.
City leaders say the water distribution sites will operate around the clock until further notice.
