Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian has secured the Democratic party’s nomination for Oregon’s Secretary of State. He will go on to face Republican primary winner Dennis Richardson.

Avakian won his party's nomination in a race that pitted him against a pair of state legislators, Rep. Val Hoyle of Eugene and Sen. Richard Devlin of Tualatin.

Avakian has served as the commissioner of Oregon’s Bureau of Labor and Industries since 2008. He campaigned on a pledge to use the Secretary of State’s Office to not only oversee state government, but to attack corporate special interests in the state. Avakian’s critics have said his goals would reshape the traditional role of the secretary of state.

Devlin has served as a state senator for more than a decade and co-chaired the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Ways and Means. He ran as an experience candidate. Devlin said his decades in government give him a vast knowledge of state finances and auditing overseen by the secretary of state.

Hoyle has served as a state representative from the Eugene area since 2010. She also briefly served as House majority leader. Hoyle said her primary focus as secretary of state would be on voter registration and bringing more transparency to campaigns as a way to prevent the influence of large contributions on Oregon’s elections.
