Amtrak’s "Horizon" railcars have been pulled from service due to corrosion concerns, affecting nearly all trips on Amtrak Cascades daily service between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Eugene, Oregon.

The report recommends restoring long-distance passenger rail service to Eastern Oregon. Passenger rail ended in the region in 1997 after Amtrak’s Pioneer line was discontinued.

The cancellation, which lasts until Thursday morning, doesn't impact trains running between Portland and Eugene or Seattle and Vancouver, B.C.

The labor impasse doesn’t involve workers who operate Amtrak trains, such as those that run on the Cascade corridor in Oregon and Washington. But those trains operate on tracks controlled by freight railroad companies and maintained by the employees who would be out on strike.

Four years after an Amtrak train jumped the tracks along the Point Defiance Bypass in Washington State, service is resuming.

Amtrak says it will restore daily service on 12 long distance routes across the country, including two that run through the Pacific Northwest.

Daily service would be restored to long-distance Amtrak trains in the latest stimulus package under discussion in Congress. That includes the Coast Starlight, which stops in Albany and Eugene on its way from Seattle to Los Angeles.

National Transportation Safety Board officials raised questions at an investigative hearing this week about the problematic curve where the deadly Washington derailment occurred.

Amtrak Cascades and Coast Starlight services are suspended between Portland and Seattle until 10 p.m. Sunday.
