Whale

The long wait is over. A federal official has given the green light for members of the Makah tribe to resume exercising their treaty right to whaling, based on a request first made in 2005. Their last hunt took place in 1999.

For the second time in less than a week, another whale carcass has washed ashore on the northern Oregon Coast, just about 100 yards from where the first body was found Saturday.

Officials are asking people to keep their distance from a dead sperm whale beached on the northern Oregon Coast.

The designations would require an extra layer of scrutiny for federally permitted projects within the habitat areas.  

Even two hours after they pass, genetic traces from orcas can be detected in the water.

A big factor is multiple days of calm, clear weather that made it easier to locate migrating gray whales.

Scientists haven’t actually seen these creatures, but they’re hearing them loud and clear. And they think hungry gray whales may be tuning in as well.

The sound had not been identified previously because of the way scientists analyze acoustic data from the ocean. 

A 78-foot-long blue whale washed up on the shores of southern Oregon this week.  

Humpback whales have been spotted in the Columbia River just downstream of the bridge to Washington.
