Following on the heels of legalizing recreational cannabis use, Oregon voters will decide on whether to decriminalize the use of drugs like cocaine, heroin and methamphetamines. Decriminalization means that if a person is caught with a small amount of these drugs, rather than facing large fines, probabation and potentially jail time, the would receive a small fine that could be waived if they seek treatment. It turns drug use from a misdemeanor or felony into a something more like a traffic ticket.
