Dennis Richardson, a former Republican state representative who challenged John Kitzhaber for governor in 2014, is now running for Oregon Secretary of State, according to his website.

Richardson enters a Secretary of State race that will see a primary between Democrats. So far, at least three candidates have said they plan to run for the Democratic nomination — including Representative Val Hoyle, Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian and Senator Richard Devlin.

For the GOP, Lane County commissioner Sid Leiken said earlier this year that he plans to run.

Richardson said some of his goals as Secretary of State would be auditing government operations, improving education in Oregon, and upholding public records laws.

"It's time to open up our state government and show the truth about our government and what it is doing — good and bad," Richardson said.

He also said he wants to promote business in Oregon and bring a rural voice to the State Lands Board.
