The last time the U.S. had to navigate a global pandemic, Americans were a lot more used to giving up personal comfort in sacrifice to the greater good. Oregon State history professor Christopher McKnight Nichols says that since the end of WWII, politicians have suggested that what makes a good citizen is American’s willingness to carry on with their daily lives and continue to spend money. Nichols argues in a new Op-Ed in the Washington Post that we have lost the language of collective sacrifice.
