Gaz Coombes — “Sonny The Strong”

Former Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes’ newest solo song “Sonny the Strong” is a fascinating biographical tale told through shimmering instrumentation. “I came across the story of ‘forgotten’ British world championship boxer Randy Turpin who, in his heyday, fought and defeated the great Sugar Ray Robinson,” Coombes explains. “Randy became the seed of the story about my character ‘Sonny The Strong’ and it just evolved from there.”

Anna Tivel — “Outsiders”

Folk musician Anna Tivel has dropped the title track from her highly-anticipated new album, “Outsiders,” which is due out on Aug. 19. The Portland-based songwriter wrote the song while viewing a documentary about Apollo 11. “For just that one moment in a time of great upheaval, it seemed like everyone paused to look up in wonder at something so remarkable that humankind was able to achieve,” says Tivel.

Sylvan Esso — “Sunburn”

Fresh from releasing their Grammy-nominated album “Free Love,” North Carolina duo Sylvan Esso returns with this new song called “Sunburn.” On a sonic level, the song is driven by a rhythmic bounce that’s elevated by a catchy synth infusion and seductive, laid-back vocals. Lyrically, the track is laden with a creative series of rapid-fire metaphors.
