Portland-based nuclear power company NuScale Power announced Monday it will lay off 154 employees — about 28% its full-time staff.

The company has designed the only small modular reactor that’s certified for use in the United States.

Last November, NuScale canceled a partnership with a group of Utah utilities that would have seen the first of those reactors built in the nation.

That project had been in development for nearly 10 years. The company noted at the time that rising inflation was a major factor in its collapse.

In its announcement Monday, NuScale said the layoffs could help save up to $60 million a year and they’re part of a strategic plan to better position the company financially and commercially.
