Officials have identified the man shot and killed by police last week as 39-year-old Eddie Brandon Todd Campbell of Portland.
Police were initially pursuing Campbell in connection to a homicide earlier that day. Gresham police found 60-year-old Jeff Thompson on the morning of Sept. 24 dead in his home of a gunshot wound.
Police identified Campbell as a suspect and located him at a motel in Southeast Portland, near 97th Avenue and Stark Street, using an automated license plate reader.
From there, details remain unclear. Campbell fled the scene initially when police arrived, bureau officials said. Police then fired shots and Campbell was killed.
Police recovered a .22-caliber handgun near Campbell after the incident, the same type of weapon used to kill Thompson earlier that day, bureau officials said. Police are still testing the weapon for a potential match.

During the incident, law enforcement gunfire killed a Portland Police Bureau K-9 named Kylo. Portland Police Chief Bob Day confirmed that officers accidentally shot the dog. It was supposed to be Kylo’s final day of service with the bureau.
Day told reporters that multiple agencies are still piecing together exactly what happened, but the impact is being felt throughout the department.
“Although we have emphasized appropriately the loss of Kylo, the loss of human life in this is equally as tragic, both for the Campbell family and for the Thompson family,” Day said.
Two Portland police officers are currently on paid leave, as is standard when officers discharge a weapon. Their names will be released next Thursday, bureau spokesperson Mike Benner said.
Authorities have released very few details about the shooting, saying there is still an open investigation. It remains unclear if or how Campbell and Thompson knew each other. It’s also unclear what happened that led to officers shooting and killing Campbell.
Portland police officials have confirmed that federal officers were present for the incident, but did not disclose which agencies they represented and how involved they were in the shooting. Day previously said on Sept. 24 that the arrest was not immigration related. At least one federal officer is currently on paid leave, Benner said.
Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez said during the press conference that his office is weighing whether the details of the shooting will eventually be presented to a grand jury. If not, he said his office will issue a detailed legal memo about the incident.
Portland police will release body-worn camera footage from officers involved on Thursday, Oct. 8, per department policy.
