Two state senators are vying to be Oregon’s next secretary of state. Democrat Shemia Fagan won the May primary by a very slim margin and now faces Republican Kim Thatcher in the general election. The secretary of state oversees elections, public records and audits of state agencies. In Oregon, the secretary of state is also first in the line of succession should the governor unexpectedly leave office, as Gov. John Kitzhaber did in 2015.
